Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
If you feel you look older than you want people to see you, a facelift may be the right procedure for you. Most people are good candidates for a face lift if they have symptoms that can be treated with a face lift, are in good health, and are prepared to do their part in getting the best possible results.
This page can help you understand what makes an ideal face lift candidate, but getting an evaluation your facial aging and medical history requires a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Antonio J. Gayoso. If you live in or around Tampa, Sarasota and St. Petersburg and would like to schedule your consultation, please call 727-895-1515 or email us today.
What Makes an Ideal Facelift Candidate?
Because the term “facelift” is often used loosely to refer to many different types of rejuvenating procedures, not everyone understands that a facelift is a specific surgical rejuvenation procedure. An ideal face lift candidate:
- Has sagging tissues that can be treated with a facelift
- Is looking for high-quality, long-term results
- Is in good general health
- Is near their ideal weight
- Does not have health conditions that may increase risks
- Does not smoke
- Is not taking medications or supplements that may increase risks
- Is completely open about his or her medical history
- Understands the face lift procedure, recovery time, and risks
- Has realistic expectations for the procedure and is psychologically healthy
All of these are desirable, but not all of them are strictly necessary.
During your consultation, you will be asked about your medical history, general health, and medications. Failure to be completely open with us about your medical history and all prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements you are taking may increase your risks. If we discover you have not been honest with us, you will not be allowed to have the procedure.
If you are a smoker, now is a good time to consider quitting. You will be asked to quit smoking for a period before and after your surgery, anyway, and quitting smoking can extend the lifetime of your good results.
What a Facelift Treats
In addition to your health, it is crucial that you have facial aging symptoms that a facelift can treat. You don’t have to be any particular age, simply bothered by symptoms that can be erased or diminished by a facelift procedure, such as:
- Excess or sagging skin in the neck
- Marionette lines
- Hollows under the eyes
- Nasolabial folds
On the other hand, a face lift is not a good treatment for a crepey appearance to the skin, which can be treated with our advanced skin care practices. If you are mostly concerned with some specific wrinkles and facial folds, you may get more targeted (albeit temporary) results with dermal fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic.
