Questions About Liposuction SurgeryConveniently located to serve St. Petersburg and Tampa

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is the use of suction to remove fat from problem areas to create a shapelier, more attractive figure.

Should obese people use liposuction to lose weight?

No. Liposuction is a body contouring technique, not a weight-loss technique. Liposuction will not generally result in significant weight loss. However, everyone can see an improved body contour from liposuction.

Should I lose weight before liposuction?

A stable weight is the best thing, since the results of liposuction will be more predictable. If you are at your ideal body weight you will benefit most, since it is easier to identify your true problem areas; those that will not respond to diet or exercise. This allows Dr. Gayoso to target those areas to get you the best results. Finally, the closer you are to your ideal weight, the lower your risk of complications.

Is liposuction safe?

Yes. Every year, hundreds of thousands of liposuction procedures are performed safely in this country, despite the media attention paid to a few cases of serious complications. Most often, these complications are tied to an untrained or inexperienced doctor, a poorly prepared facility, or a lapse in judgment in patient selection, or extent of treatment. When performed with good judgment by a qualified doctor in an accredited facility, liposuction is a very safe procedure.

Are there different kinds of liposuction? Is one better than the others?

There are many different kinds of liposuction.. In all procedures, the area to be treated is prepared with fluid that contains an anesthetic and other medications, helping the fat removal process. The most common type is tumescent or suction assisted (SAL) liposuction. Other kinds include: ultrasound-assisted liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, and water-assisted liposuction. Each has a slightly different way of preparing the fat to be removed, but all involve suction for the removal of the fat tissue. There is no reason to believe that one type of liposuction is inherently better than the others. Each may have its appropriate use, and some are more proven than others. Dr. Gayoso will pick the best one for your procedure.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

In addition to being near your ideal weight, it is important to have a good understanding of the procedure and its likely results as well as a positive mental attitude. See “Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?” to learn more.
