Questions About BOTOXConveniently located to serve St. Petersburg and Tampa

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is an acronym for botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria clostridium botulinum. As administered by a qualified plastic surgeon, it can reduce the appearance of some facial wrinkles.

What can BOTOX® effectively treat?

BOTOX® can often successfully treat:

  • Forehead lines
  • Lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet
  • “Bunny lines” on the sides of the nose
  • “Lipstick lines” around the mouth
  • Neck banding

Where is BOTOX® placed?

BOTOX® is injected into the muscle below the affected area.

How does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX® inhibits muscle contraction by temporarily paralyzing the nerve fibers that generate muscle activity. Limiting the contraction of these muscles helps smooth out wrinkles.

How long before I notice results?

The desired effects of BOTOX® typically appear within three to 10 days.

How long will I see results?

The treatment lasts approximately three to five months before the muscles regain action. Repeat treatments can maintain your results. Without follow-up treatments, your lines will gradually return.

Is BOTOX® safe?

BOTOX® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the cosmetic treatment of forehead lines in 2002. The BOTOX® solution itself is purified. There are, however, some rare but serious side effects associated with BOTOX®.

What are the side effects of BOTOX®?

In rare cases, BOTOX® can cause allergic reactions. Get medical help immediately if you feel dizzy, experience asthma-like symptoms or have problems breathing, swallowing or speaking. Although the BOTOX® solution is purified, the botulinum toxin has in some instances spread from the injection site and caused the symptoms of botulism; if you experience muscle weakness, vision problems, hoarseness, loss of bladder control or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.

Other side effects may include:

    • Dry mouth
    • Droopy eyelids
    • Discomfort at injection site
    • Drowsiness
    • Headache
    • Neck pain
    • Vision problem

The possible risks and side effects of BOTOX® will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation.

Is BOTOX® effective for both women and men?

Yes, both men and women have achieved results with BOTOX®.

How long does BOTOX® treatment take?

About 10 minutes.

Is BOTOX® treatment painful?

BOTOX® is injected with a small needle that many patients do not feel; others may experience minor, temporary discomfort at the injection site.

Will BOTOX® interfere with my facial expressions?

Although the results of diminished frown lines will be noticeable, BOTOX® will not dramatically alter your facial appearance.

Am I a candidate for BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is not suitable for everyone. A consultation with Florida plastic surgeon and BOTOX® provider Dr. Antonio J. Gayoso will determine if BOTOX® is right for you. Currently, BOTOX® is not approved for children, and pregnant women should avoid its use. BOTOX® must be used with extreme caution in those suffering from muscular diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) or neuromuscular disorders.
