Causes of Breast Asymmetry

A small degree of breast asymmetry is normal, and may not be bothersome. Conditions that may cause more severe breast asymmetry include:

  • Developmental asymmetry—one breast simply grows larger, wider or longer than the other breast.
  • Acquired breast asymmetry due to pregnancy or weight gain; previous surgery or injury.
  • Lumpectomy, mastectomy, or other surgery for breast cancer or infection (mastitis)

Sometimes breast asymmetry is transient; particularly after nursing. It may be necessary to wait to determine whether surgical intervention is the right treatment. This is especially true of developmental breast asymmetry. One breast may grow first, then the other. For very young women reporting breast asymmetry, treatment may be delayed to determine when is the best time for surgery.

Treating Breast Asymmetry

Depending on your cosmetic goals, there are a number of options for treating breast asymmetry. The simplest is to use breast augmentation to increase the size of the smaller breast, or increase the size of both breasts so they are the desired size. Other times, a breast reduction may be performed on the larger breast. A breast lift, sometimes with nipple and areola reduction or reshaping, may be used to ensure both breasts are equally shaped and attractive.
