Do I Have to Replace My Breast Implants?
Ideally, breast implants are designed to be lifetime devices, but in practice nothing lasts forever. Breast implants can give great long-term results from a breast augmentation procedure, but the reality is that you will likely have to replace them at some point during your life. Sometimes this is due to an implant failure, but other times it is due to the natural changes in your breasts that may lead to less attractive results over time. You may even want to replace your breast implants if you did not initially get good results from your breast augmentation procedure, or you may decide you want to improve those results with a different size or style of breast implant.
No matter the reason why you want to replace your breast implants, it is crucial to talk to a surgeon with experience in secondary breast augmentation, which has different characteristics than primary breast augmentation. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Antonio J. Gayoso has extensive experience performing secondary breast augmentation for patients in the Tampa area and across Florida. He invites you to schedule a consultation to discuss replacing your breast implants.
Reasons for Replacing Breast Implants
Breast implant technology is constantly improving, and with that technological improvement, we expect to see a continuing improvement in the lifetime of the breast implants. However, there are many reasons why women seek to replace their breast implants, including:
- Breast implant failure
- Changes in results over time
- Unsatisfactory cosmetic results
- Desire for a different size or style of breast implant
- Normally aging process of the breast
In the past, some surgeons recommended that you regularly replace your breast implants every ten years or so, but this is no longer the case. As long as you are happy with them and not having any issues, we can leave your breast implants in place indefinately.
Breast Implant Failure
We know that implants are not a perfect device and sometimes breast implants fail. When a saline breast implant ruptures, the breast will visibly deflate as your body absorbs the saline solution. This will lead to significant asymmetry and may cause you anxiety about your appearance. We work hard to get you a quick appointment so you can have your appearance restored with minimum disruption.
Silicone breast implants do not visibly deflate when ruptured. Instead, rupture of a silicone breast implant is normally detected with a regular MRI designed to check for rupture. This is not an emergency, but should also be corrected quickly.
Changes in Results over Time
The majority of women are initially satisfied with the results of their breast augmentation. With the passing of time these results may change. Just like natural breasts, augmented breasts can age (sag) over time, which may diminish your satisfaction with their appearance. Capsular contracture can also cause your results to change over time, and when serious (or painful) may require the replacement of your breast implants.
Unsatisfactory Cosmetic Results
Sometimes you may not get the results you desire from breast augmentation. You may not like the shape of your breasts, they may be uneven, you may have poor scarring. Many types of poor cosmetic results can be corrected by replacing your breast implants. Remember, it’s important to wait at least six months before you begin to critically evaluate your results. It can take that long or longer for your results to be final.
Changing the Size or Style of Breast Implants
The most common reason why women are not satisfied with the results of their breast augmentation is that they simply want a different size or style of breast implants. Women choose to go larger or smaller with their implant size and the reasons are varied. Another common request is replacing saline with silicone gel breast implants to improve the quality of results.
