What is nose surgery?
Nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty or a nose job, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance and proportion of your nose. Sometimes, it can also improve the function of your nose by removing obstructions to breathing.
What can nose surgery correct?
Nose surgery can correct most of the common complaints people have about the appearance of their nose, including:
- Nose that is too large or small compared to other facial features
- Nose that is too wide at the bridge, or, to a lesser extent, the base
- Humps, bumps, or unattractive slope to the bridge
- A nasal tip that is too large, bulbous, drooping, or upturned
- Large, wide, or upturned nostrils
- Asymmetry or crookedness to the nose
These concerns can be addressed whether they are developmental or due to some form of nasal injury.
Who is a good candidate for nose surgery?
A good candidate for nose surgery should:
- Have a nose that has finished growing
- Be physically healthy
- Not be taking certain drugs or supplements
- Understand the procedure and its risks
- Have specific, realistic goals

Will I know what my new nose will look like?
During your consultation, Dr. Antonio J. Gayoso will listen to your concerns and goals for nose surgery. He will then use a 3D facial imaging system to help illustrate the changes you desire and any recommendations he may make for other, complementary changes. This will help you understand the goals and surgical principles used to achieve your goals. However, it is impossible to predict exactly what your nose will look like after surgery.
What is the difference between closed and open nose surgery?
In closed nose surgery, the only incisions made will be inside the nose. In open nose surgery an incision is made in the skin between your nostrils (the columella). Which procedure is best for you depends on your medical history, your anatomy, and the goals for your procedure.
What is recovery from nose surgery like?
After your nose surgery, you may have a splint on your nose, and tubes or packing in the nose. You will likely experience some discomfort, although this is typically controllable with medications. There will be some swelling and bruising. You should count on taking a week off from work, and refraining from vigorous activities for six weeks. The bruising should have gone down by the time you return to work, but the swelling may persist for some time. You can learn more about recovery from nose surgery on our rhinoplasty recovery page.
When will my final results be visible? How long do they last?
Even immediately after surgery, the appearance of your nose will be improved. The appearance will continue to change subtly, improving over several months before your final results. In most cases, the results of your rhinoplasty will be permanent, although some people experience changes in the appearance of their nose as a natural result of aging.
