Some of the most noticeable signs of aging are facial wrinkles. They can start forming in our twenties and turn into a permanent facial fixture in the years to come. Luckily, we have Botox, which can reverse the signs of aging, prevent new wrinkles from forming, and give your skin a natural and youthful appearance.

How Do Wrinkles Form?

Wrinkles can form in a variety of ways. Sun damage, smoking, sleep position, and aging all play a role in the appearance of your skin. As we age, we start to lose collagen, which is responsible for keeping our skin tight and smooth.

With facial movements and expressions, our skin folds and creates wrinkles. As we continually use our facial muscles, we constantly recreate these folds, and what was once only a crease seen during a facial expression turns into a wrinkle seen when your face is at rest.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a chemical toxin made from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is what we call a “neuromodulator,” because when injected into a muscle, it will cause temporary paralysis.

This type of paralysis relaxes muscles and reduces their movements, softening the expressions that cause facial wrinkles. Without the repetitive movements, we give our body a chance to rebuild collagen and smooth out wrinkles while preventing new ones from forming.

When Should You Choose Botox?

Every person shows signs of aging at different stages of life. It is a personal choice when someone wants to start investing in their appearance of their skin.

Botox treatment is becoming a more popular procedure in younger generations, because it is seen as a preventative treatment for wrinkles. We are seeing people starting to use Botox as soon as their late twenties and early thirties. It is still most widely used for people in their forties and fifties.

Botox helps target many different areas of the face. Some of the lines Botox helps reduce include:

• Horizontal forehead lines
• Crow’s feet around the sides of the eyes
• Vertical glabellar lines, or “frown lines”

Botox can also be used off label in a number of other areas, including the chin, neck, and around the lips.

The Botox Procedure

The Botox procedure starts with a consultation with Dr. Gayoso or Jessica McCarry, PA-C. You will have a full facial assessment and discussion on how and why Botox can work for you.

Once a treatment plan is established, you will have the choice of a topical anesthetic to help provide more comfort during the procedure. Once you are numbed, the provider will typically mark the areas of treatment.

After that, the provider will inject a precise number of units into the facial muscles using a very fine needle. The entire procedure will take only 10 to 15 minutes.

Botox is not recommended when pregnant or breastfeeding. Inform the doctor if you require assistance with a new treatment plan to accommodate your requirements.

After Your Treatment

It is recommended to avoid strenuous activities for the rest of the day. There is minimal potential for bruising, so returning to work or social activities can be planned. There may be some swelling at injection sites, but this only lasts for a few minutes.

The initial response to Botox can typically be seen after a few days, and the full results should be visible seven to ten days after the treatment. These results last three to four months, after which you can visit us for another treatment.

It is important to maintain your wrinkle reducing regimen, as this is the most effective way to get rid of wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming.
